There are different ways of contamination by littering that affect the Earth differently and negatively.
When we litter in the sea, for example, animals that live there can confuse the trash with some of the food they are used to eat and get terribly sick or even reach death. One example is turtles that eat plastic bags thinking they are jellyfish, which is a food they usually eat.
So due to this, and other sea animals eating our trash, as we fish these animals and proceed to eat them, the microplastics they ate before are now in our body. This can cause us serious illnesses such as heart attacks, cancer and cardiovascular sicknesses.
People also deposit chemical substances illegally in the sea, which evaporate forming clouds that later rain on land and affect other species.
The same goes for contamination on land. When we throw rubbish on the floor, other animals might confuse it as food and ingest it. Later, when we obtain those animals and eat them, the trash they have will affect us too.
Some of the ways to prevent and end this contamination are stop depositing and throwing trash into the environment, including the sea.
We can also try to collect as much rubbish as we can that is already contaminating.
In conclusion, by throwing a tiny piece of plastic we can cause suffering and death of other animals and humans.
People should be conscious of what they can do by littering. We can show them what to do to achieve a healthy planet in which living beings don’t suffer because of human contamination.
